Training for the Lands End to John o’Groats ride seems to be going well and I’m learning lots.
After a 120 mile ride back in Feb I started having pain in the front of my left knee when cycling. Too much in one go, cycling on one of the coldest weekends of the year (my water bottle froze in the first half hour!) and not having my bike properly adjusted to fit me were probably all factors. After reading lots of tips, a week off the bike, stretching properly, raising the seat a touch and moving my cleat position the knee pain has vanished. Hooray.
So I’ve now got the above cycle computer to watch my cadence because if it’s low (choosing to higher gears) this can apparently put strain on the knees. 77 might seem low, but I a friend told me this is from coasting on descents.
The heart rate monitor is quite interesting. Though I had a pretty scary experience a couple of weeks ago. I set out to Richmond park to do laps at a high bpm with just a bottle of water. Suddenly on the way back home I hit a low and had no energy left. Tired, dizzy and hungry with no money I had to stop and sit down several times before I made it back home. A valuable lesson was learnt: always carry food or money.
The above are my averages from a ride out to Box Hill via Richmond.
Thanks to all those that have donated on the Just Giving Page, really chuffed that we’ve raised 50% of the target already!
The plan is to write and post pics here during the ride, so if you want to keep up to date here’s the link to subscribe.

The diddy-daddling is over. It’s been a few years but I’ve finally given my space on the world wide web a little refresh - NigelPayne.com
After purchasing many themes and nights altering code, I’ve come to the decision that Wordpress is not the answer. To cut a long story short it turns out my hosting is rubbish so I’ve opted for a simple, reliable Cargo hosted site.
It’s nothing whizzing, no hidden Easter eggs, bells or whistles. Just something I can update fast and easily.
Let me know what you think or if there are glitches.
